Description

The Ginkgo Bar Stool extends the Ginkgo language into a taller, more vertical form, pairing a carved botanical backrest with an elevated hand-shaped seat and long tapered frame.

Hand-shaped from solid Australian hardwood using traditional tools including axe, adze, spokeshave, rasps, scrapers, chisels, and hand planes, the stool is built through a slow process of shaping, fitting, and refinement. The broad backrest draws from the fan-like form of the ginkgo leaf, while the seat is carved with soft transitions and a gently resolved edge.

The frame is grounded in chair-making logic, with rungs providing both structural integrity and a natural footrest. Exposed joinery, visible tool marks, and subtle irregularities remain part of the finished object, holding the making process openly within the piece.

The Ginkgo Bar Stool is designed to be compact in footprint while remaining generous in support. It is suited to kitchen islands, bars, hospitality interiors, and architectural spaces where a sculptural but restrained seating form is required.

Made individually to order. Slight variation in surface, gesture, and proportion is inherent to the process.

Finish note

Shown in Patina — the studio’s pale timber finish, developed to soften the colour of Australian hardwood while preserving visible grain, texture, and surface character.

Patina is achieved through a natural tannin-removal process, followed by an adaptation of traditional cerusing, where lime is worked into the open grain to create a quieter, chalky white that allows the form to come forward. The surface is sealed with a premium hardwax finish for durability, tactility, and long-term protection.

Charred and Natural finishes are also available by enquiry. Custom finishes are available for interior, hospitality, and project requirements.
